WCAG Standards

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define minimum contrast ratios for text:

  • Level AA: At least 4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text (18pt+ or 14pt bold)
  • Level AAA: At least 7:1 for normal text, 4.5:1 for large text

Best Practices

  • Aim for at least 4.5:1 contrast ratio for body text
  • Use higher contrast (7:1) for important content
  • Avoid pure black text on pure white for reduced eye strain
  • Test with real users when possible
  • Check different text sizes and weights
